Die Hinfahrt / the drive

Nevada, der trockenste Bundesstaat der USA.

/Nevada,the dryest of all states.

Statistisch gesehen regnet es genau 1Tag pro Jahr in Las Veags. Ich war 2004, 2007, 2008 jeweils in Las Vegas und immer dann hat es geregnet. Nun, auf meiner Hinfahrt von Reno nach Houston fuhr ich auch über Las Vegas und trotz 35°C war es sehr bedeckt und der ein oder andere Tropfen kam herunter. Man kann also sagen dass es, statistisch gesehen, zu 100% bei meinen Aufenthalten in Nevadas größter Stadt geregnet hat. Schlimmer als Berlin.

/Statisticaly, it rains exactly one day per year in  Las Vegas.When I visited the town in 2004, 2007 and 2008 it always rained. This time, on my drive to Houston, I passed Las Vegas. Despite 95°F the sky was covered in clouds and a few rain drops fell. Accordingly, one can say that statistically it rained 100% of the time I was in LV. Worse than Berlin.

Arizona

Nachdem der Hoover Damm aus Sicherheitsgründen gesperrt war, musste ich eine alternative Strecke nach Kingman, AZ nehmen. Es war schon spät und in AZ, so dachte ich, würde dann noch eine Stunde hinzukommen. Jedoch habe ich auf dem Hooverdamm die Uhren nicht abgleichen können und wusste nicht, dass es in AZ keine Sommerzeit gibt. Somit wurde erst die Zeit in New Mexico umgestellt.

/For security reasons, Hoover dam was closed and I needed to figure out a different route to Kingman, AZ.It was late and in AZ, I thought, I would have to add another hour. However, I couldn´t compare times on Hoover dam and therefore wasn´t aware of the fact that AZ doesn´t have daylight savings time. Time was changed in New Mexico then.

Texas

Abends in New Mexico dachte ich wieder, dass die Uhren um eine Stunde vorgestellt werden, wenn ich die Grenze nach Texas erreichen sollte. Leider wieder falsch. Als Akademiker zählte ich dann 1 und 1 zusammen und schlussfolgerte, dass es in Texas wohl auch keine Sommerzeit gibt. Erneut Falsch. Die Zeitgrenze verläuft nicht entlang der Staatsgrenze, sie veräuft mittendrin. Damit konnte man ja nun nicht wirklich rechnen.

Zwischen San Antonio und Houston liegt wohl ein Gebiet deutscher Siedler, Neben New Berlin (fast so berühmt wie New York) gab es auch ein Weimar. Nun Kenne ich schon 2 Weimars in Amerika, mehr also als in Deutschland.

/Later in the day I again was convinced that I needed to add another hour once I passed the Texas border. Wrong! As a person in academia I logically concluded that Texas must also have no daylight savings time. Wrong again. The time change happens in the middle of Texas. This was unexpected.

Between the cities of San Antonio and Houston must be an area of German settlements. In addition to New Berlin (a city almost as famous as New York), I could also find a Weimar. The second Weimar that I know of In the US, more Weimars than I know of in Germany.
